Hiring an entry level employee for Gas Piping

The business model we have grown with has very strict standards for hiring new employees.  Our struggling economy has set new standards for customer service and value that many traditional mechanical companies were not able to adapt to.

First requirement is a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.  Keeping our overhead low is key for our survival. Paying extra to insure an employee with a bad driving record does not fit into our business model!

Well spoken.  Speaks clearly, easy to understand, both in person and over the phone.  Our new hire is someday going to represent our company to our customers.  Being able to clearly communicate with customers is an essential skill!

Tough.  Our job is not easy!  Crawling under houses wrenching iron gas pipe over your head laying on your back in muddy wet insulation is just not fun.  I like to find out my potential employees hobbies during our interview.  Candidates with mechanical hobbies aren’t afraid to get dirty, and generally are better with their hands in tight places.

Clean cut, professional appearance.  That’s the catch!  We bring a level of customer service rarely seen in the construction industry.  The stereotype greasy dirty gas pipe fitter from the cartoons is out of business.   A candidate must be mechanically inclined, willing to do some of the toughest work in the trades, yet still maintain a professional appearance and keep tools, vans, etc clean and neat.

In this current economy, it’s hard for a worker to find a job.  In the first hour I posted my job position available, we received over 20 phone calls from potential applicants.  To get the job, you now have to be the total package.  Just knowing your trade isn’t enough, well spoken, neat & clean, organized, all need to be a part of your skillset.

Crawl Restoration, Damaged Duct Replacement

Flooding, animal damage, poor initial installation, corrosion.  Your homes heating ductwork is responsible for circulating fresh air thru your home for your family to breath. Damaged HVAC ducting can cause health problems, excessive energy consumption and premature equipment failure.

The costs of repairs greatly varies.  A fully mechanical HVAC company with multiple skilled troubleshooting technicians on payroll is going to charge more for these services than a specialized company with ducting specific vans & employees.  Prices range from $200-$350 per heat run in the Northwest.  Be sure to get a good description of the services provided!  Does the price include removal and disposal if the damaged duct work?  Is the new flex material being installed have the correct R value?  Are the employee’s wrapping the exposed metal?

Don’t live with damaged ducting, call a ductwork replacement specialist and save on your heating / cooling costs, equipment life and breath cleaner air in your home.

Getting the best Deal on Natural or Propane Gas Service to your home

J&M Gas Piping Services

Adding a Propane or Natural Gas System to your home is one of the most valuable upgrades you can do.  The energy savings alone are worth the investment!  The added benefits of gas heat, cooking with gas, never refilling tanks on the BBQ, etc really make the choice easy.

Making your gas system affordable is the hard part.  Here’s a few tips to make converting your home to an energy efficient gas powered home less painful on your wallet.

Most Propane Providers offer at least 10′ of free underground from the tank.  Many offer up to 20′ free.  Most times this does not include the ditch, save yourself and hire a neighbor kid for your ditch.  Before getting quotes for underground from your gas piping installer, check with your gas provider for their rates.

Let the Propane provider install the exterior regulators.  Most times the regulators are included in your tank set price, you would be double paying if your purchased your exterior initial regulator from your gas piping contractor.

Wiegh out the costs difference for adding more appliances.  Most fuel providers will give you a better install price if they are going to be selling you more fuel.  Locally, NW Natural Gas often will bring the line to the home for free with 3 or more gas appliances.  If you were only planning on two appliances, often times you can get the third appliance for free or better when you add the savings from the gas provider.

Shop around for propane companies.  There are tons of different packages available.  Buying your tank will save you money in the long run.  Ask around, some propane providers will sell certified used tanks, but they never advertise this!

Hopefully this helps.  Contact a Gas Piping Installation Professional when you begin your project, they can help you plan for your system and save you time & money.

Air Duct Cleaning Can Greatly Improve Your Indoor Air Quality!

Your homes furnace ducting system can become contaminated from construction or remodel projects, pets and animals or just naturally over time.  Dust buildup in your ductwork can be a breeding ground for dust mites, harmful bacterias and occasionally molds.  Think of it as the area that never gets cleaned behind your fridge or cook stove, except your family is breathing it!

Fortunately, air duct cleaning services are very affordable.  Rates can be found as low as $16 per vent in some areas, a small investment fr your families health.  Brush driven powerful vacuums rotate thru your homes ducting system and softly break loose debris, sucking it up in the process.  HEPA filters protect your home and the workers from breathing the harmful contaminants as the vacuum works.

Homeowners who have had this service completed report lesser allergies, quieter furnace operation, longer intervals between furnace filter change outs and less dust around the home.

JandMservices.us     503-680-0195

Your homes heating duct system can be damaged over time.  Animals may enter your crawl or attic area, water damage, domestic pets, improper initial installation, etc.   Leaving this damage unattended can have many harmful effects.  Torn or ripped ductwork can be costing you money thru heat loss into your crawl space or attic, also making your heat system work harder.  Water damaged ducting can mold, causing serious health problems for you & your family.

Have your furnace duct system inspected.  Most companies will perform this service very inexpensive, any damage findings repaired will quickly pay for themselves.  A licensed ducting contractor can perform small duct repairs in a few hours, well worth the cost to save your health and monthly energy bill.  Be sure the ducting they are installing meets new codes, have them show you the energy rating on the duct.

During stormy winter months, a natural gas or propane powered generator may be a lifesaver!

http://jandmservices.us/  360-772-0714

Watching the wind bend the trees outside my window this morning, the thought of a power outage crosses my mind.  In my home, this means no lights, possibly losing all the food in my refridgerator & freezer, no running water, and worst of all, no heat.

A few hours with no lights is a good excuse to break out the candles and play games with the kids.  A day or two (or longer) without power however can bring some serious problems.  Anyone who has had to throw away an entire freezer full of thawed rotten food knows, it’s hard watching your hard earned stockpile go in the trash!  No heat during a winter power outage is much more than being uncomfortable, it can lead to frozen pipes and considerable damage to your home.

Generator’s come in all sizes and power outputs.  The generator can be directly hardwired into your electrical panel, automatically keeping the power on to crucial circuits during a pwer outage.  Traditional gasoline powered generators do work of course, but they require constant refueling and fuel from last year could go bad, causing  mechanical problems when you need it to work the most.

Propane or Natural Gas Generator’s are economical, never need refueling, and the fuel source never goes bad.  A qualifed gas techniciancan install a propane or natural gas line from your existing gas fuel system directly to your gas powered generator.  Most Gas Line Installation companies have a surprisingly affordable rate on retrofit gas lines, much more affordable than a wasted freezer full of food!

Planning for future Gas needs during your installation

There are many things to consider when planning a new Gas line system.  Consulting a knowledgeable Gas professional during the planning stage can save much money and hassle down the road.

What appliances are you currently planning  on having plumbed for Natural or Propane gas?  The initial section of gas pipe that comes directly off the gas meter or propane tank is referred to as the “Trunkline”.  The Trunkline is the largest line in your system and can drop in size as branches off decrease the BTU load.  Planning ahead now will ensure your Trunkline will have enough available BTU’s for your current gas appliances as well as future appliances.  Although adding lines at a later time to specific appliances can be  relatively inexpensive, if your initial trunkline will not support additional appliances costs can quickly rise.

Planning ahead and considering all future gas needs can really save you in the future.  Having your trunkline oversized during the initial installation to accommodate future needs is much more cost effective than paying for it to be redone at a later time!  A good Gas Contractor will help you plan for the future by sizing all of your potential options and educating you on the best choices to make for you current and future budget.  Some high BTU usage items such as Gas powered generator’s or Tankless Water Heaters will need a substantially larger trunkline.  Appliances such as modern Gas Dryers use very little extra gas and rarely require any extra sizing at all.  Have a good idea of all of your current and potential future gas needs before consulting a Gas Contractor, making the correct choices now can really save money later!
